A Brake Shoe is positioned inside the brake drum with the essential function of pushing outward against the inside of the drum to slow the wheel and eventually stop your vehicle. When you apply the brakes, hydraulic fluid is pushed to the wheel cylinder which forces both Brake Shoes out and against the sides of the brake drum to stop the wheel’s motion.
Every Brake Shoe is in a half moon shape with a gritty material on the outer side of the shoe that creates friction when pushed against the inside of the brake drum. Over time, the Brake Shoe’s friction material will wear down as a natural side effect of using the brakes. When the friction material wears down to a certain point, you will likely hear a grinding noise that tells you that your brakes need to be serviced.
If you don’t replace the Brake Shoe when the friction material is worn can lead to further damage. Without the friction material, metal becomes exposed on the Brake Shoe and will grind against the inside of the brake drum when the brakes are applied. This metal on metal grinding can cause excess heat and drum wear, potentially leading to cracks in the brake drum or brake failure.
