- Braking components similar to brake pads that are housed within the brake drum
- Push against the brake drum to create friction that slows and stops your vehicle
- Replace if you hear a grinding noise when braking or experience decreased brake performance
A Brake Shoe is housed within a brake drum with the basic function of pushing outward against the inside of the drum to slow your vehicle’s wheel and allow it to come to a stop. When you apply the brakes, hydraulic fluid is pushed to the wheel cylinder which forces both Brake Shoes against the side of the drum brake to slow the wheel’s movement.
A Brake Shoe is shaped like a half moon with a gritty material that helps create friction when pressed against the interior of the drum. Over time, the friction material on the Brake Shoe will wear out as it repeatedly rubs against the brake drum. When the material has worn off to a certain point, the Brake Shoe will emit a grinding sound to tell you that your brakes need to be serviced.
Not replacing the Brake Shoe once the friction material has worn out can lead to further damage. Without the friction material, the metal is exposed on the Brake Shoe and will rub against the interior of the drum brake when the brakes are applied. This metal on metal grinding can cause excess heat and drum wear, potentially leading to cracks in the brake drum or brake failure.
When it’s time to replace the Brake Shoe, exchange it with a new Brake Shoe from OMNIPARTS AUTOMOTIVE offered by Nissan North America. This high-quality replacement part is made to fit your exact model and year. See the What This Fits tab for more fitment information.
