Your brake drum is a cylindrical housing typically made of cast iron with two brake shoes inside. When the brakes are applied, your vehicle sends brake fluid to the brake drum causing the brake shoes to push outward on the interior of the brake drum housing. The pressure of the brake shoes on the inside of the brake drum slows the motion of the wheel and eventually brings your vehicle to a stop.
Unlike disc brakes where the brake pads and rotors are fully exposed, the brake drum unit is a closed system. The brake drum houses the two brake shoes and is completely closed off. If your brake drum becomes too worn or is cracked or damaged, debris, water, or dirt can enter the brake drum and cause the system to wear quicker or rust internally.
It's likely time to install a new brake drum if there's a scraping or grinding sound emitting from one or more wheels. The scraping or grinding sound may get worse when you brake but can also happen while you're driving. You may also notice a soft or spongy brake pedal when you brake, which means the brake pedal doesn't respond as quickly or it needs to be pushed down harder in order to slow your vehicle down. If the brake shoes are too worn down in the brake drum, you might notice sputtering or pulsing when braking.
When it's time to replace your brake drum, it's important to exchange it with a quality brake drum designed to fit your vehicle model and year.
